News - Full Report

Newsbrief: June/July 2008

Dear Emmaus family,

The Walks #37 and #38 were, once again, a tremendous blessing to the 48 pilgrims who are now established as part of the Emmaus family.  We trust that you have all been slotted into an Accountability Group.  If not, chat to your sponsor.

Some comments from those new to the family:

»  “God has been working in my life in wonderful ways since the Emmaus weekend.   Day by day the Lord is taking me on a path of discovering myself and a mounting inner peace”

»  “Oh! I’m having such marvelous moments sharing my Emmaus Walk with family and friends.  The more I talk the more I realize how much I took in and never will I be the same again.  My Bible has come alive!”

»  “What a wonderful time it was for me, I had not felt that free and happy in a very long time, and still am.”

So, dear family, it is once again time to be seriously and prayerfully considering sponsoring pilgrims.  (See SPONSORSHIP letter from Mike further down this Newsbrief.)  God knows whom He wants on the next set of Walks .. we ALL  just have to be obedient to His prompting and go out and sponsor His pilgrims.  Your Agape gift to those planning, and doing the admin work will be to get the applications in as early as possible .... forward them to DOUG SWANSON, Fax: 086 673 1889.

The team selection committees have met and prayerfully considered names for the teams for Walks #39 and #40.  Only through prayer and selfless servanthood have we enjoyed 38 successful Emmaus Walks.  The praise and glory go to God for calling each team volunteer by name and equipping them for the tasks ahead

Thank you that you will be mindful, of Manie and Kerryn, and the preparation time for these Walks, in your prayers.

►   We trust that everyone is already enthusiastically and prayerfully making Agape Gifts for both the Chrysalis Flights (lots of worms and butterflies please) (See CHRYSALIS letter from Alwylene below) and  for our Emmaus Walks #39 and #40.

►    Have you any really, really BRIGHT IDEAS for fundraising?  Because Emmaus is a non-profit organization, we find we need to raise funds in order to keep the costs to the pilgrims and team members down.  Should you have a foolproof way of raising funds, please contact our Board Member in charge:  Kay Basson, @ Tel: 042 295 1832, Cell: 082 879 1549 or kaybill@cybertrade.co.za.

 Family News snippets

»  At the time of writing, Kevin Rheeder is recovering slowly and steadily, but still has a long way to go.  His parents thank one and all for the prayers uttered on Kevin’s behalf, and  they continue to trust God.  They stand on the words of the old hymn:

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear
all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

»  Shirley Butler, who suffered a stroke recently is making a slow, complete recovery. Thanks and Praise to God.

A word on SPONSORSHIP from Mike van Rensburg, our Community Lay Director.

At the heart of Emmaus lies one of the biggest gifts – sponsoring another person onto a Walk.  Can you remember what your response was at closing on your walk?  It is one of the highlights to me as someone in the community.  What I do notice is that so many pilgrims are on fire (I can see it in their eyes)  and they state that they are going to sponsor many new pilgrims.

Then fourth days interfere!!  We get bogged down in work, family life and realise that it was really only us on the walk that changed.  The world is still the same old place. Fairly quickly it sucks us back into its reality and very soon most of us have sponsoring still as a priority – but way down there somewhere on the list.  You know the feeling – I will get to it.  I just need to do.....

How many of us are in that trap?  Sponsoring is one of the biggest gifts, but it is also one of your biggest responsibilities as a fellow pilgrim.  The role of Emmaus is to raise up leadership in the church and wider community and if we as pilgrims don’t partake in sponsoring others then we are failing.  After all the community of Port Elizabeth Emmaus is each and every past pilgrim.  It is not the Emmaus model; it is definitely not the local Emmaus Board or even the Board members, but each and every one of us.

How do we sponsor?

Start off by PRAYING.  Ask God to reveal to you who He wants on His Walk.  He has prospective pilgrims in mind. In fact God tells us in many different ways who needs to attend the next walk and the next.  Listen to His voice.  Look for the signs.

Keep on PRAYING.  Draw up a list of prospective pilgrims as God reveals names to you.  PRAY and ask God for an opportunity to discuss the Emmaus Walk with these people.   When you have an appointment with a prospective pilgrim PRAY that God will work through you.

Once you have invited someone you need to PRAY that the Holy Spirit will guide the person in their decision making.

Should your prospective pilgrim complete an application or not – keep on PRAYING for them.  It is someone whom God wants you to pray for.

And yes you are right.  PRAYER is central to sponsoring as well.  Job 22:27 When you pray, He will answer you, and you will keep the vows you made.

And if sponsoring seems like a daunting task contact your sponsor and ask for help.  It is part of their ongoing responsibilities to you.

Quite a few people at the post walk gathering pledged to invite specific people to the next walks.  Do you need help?  Please email me if you do so that we can put you in contact with people that are more than willing to help.

The working teams for the walks in October/November are coming along very nicely.  Please keep them in your PRAYERS as well as they start with preparations.
God bless you as you serve Him in everything that you do.

De Colores,

Dear People of God

“ Here is the story of your life: You are on a mission from God.”  These are the words from John Ortberg in his book titled:  “If you want to walk on water you’ve got to get out of the boat.”

After overcoming a brief moment of doubt as to whether I am really doing what God wants me to do, God has revealed to me once again that I must trust Him and carry on.  He will bless our efforts to get Chrysalis off the ground.

I have just realized once again that God will never ask any of us to do something we cannot do.

The kind of assignments God gives in the Bible are always God-sized.  They are always beyond what people can do, because He wants to demonstrate His nature, His strength, His provision and His kindness to His people and to a watching world.  This is the only way the world will come to know him.” – John Ortberg

Where God calls, God gifts.  We are not called just to work for God.  We are called to work with God.
We need the prayers and support from our Emmaus Community for our first set of flights which will be held at the end of the year.  Boys Flight: 28 – 30 November and Girls flight: 5 – 7 December 2008.

Please send your volunteer and caterpillar application forms in as soon as possible.
The venue for these flights is the St Luke’s retreat centre.

Fly with Christ.  DE COLORES
